Object Detail

Description
Tall bottles with thin necks are a distinctive part of the Kuepfer’s practice. Correspondence with Stuart Park (who gifted the work) reveals that Kuepfer had made a large number of these, upwards of 250 works between 1979-1986. The exaggeratedly narrow neck means that the bottles are almost entirely non-functional - a play on the function vs artistry debate that would define much of New Zealand's studio glass practice.

This bottle is exemplary of the technical skill that Kuepfer brought to New Zealand; his expertise helped lay the foundation for New Zealand's hot glass movement.

The intense blue coloration of the bottle was achieved through the use of cobalt blue, while the contrasting yellow traces were most likely applied as powdered glass during the blowing process. This reflects the clarity and simplicity of Kuepfer's design aesthetic.
